Sherlock Holmes Review

My personal response Sherlock Holmes is that it was a very good & interesting film. It had a modern twist to the old fashioned story & was very good to watch. It kept you stuck into the film because you wanted to find out the mystery to the story. Also, Robert Downy Jr who played Sherlock Holmes played his part very well & made him fun & difference.

The director of Sherlock Holmes was Guy Ritchie & it was released in 2009. The studio was Warner Bros. Other films Guy Ritchie has directed are Revolver, Snatch & RocknRolla. Also, other films realised at the same time as Sherlock Holmes in 2009 were Avatar, Its Complicated & Did You Hear about the Morgan’s. The total lifetime gross worldwide of this film was $523,029,864.

Things that I liked about the film were the editing, especially in the fight scenes. Before the proper fight scene occurs we are shown it in slow motion with a voiceover of Sherlock Holmes explaining each move specifically to us. I also liked the old fashioned theme & how the costumes, props & settings matched this theme. For example Sherlock Holmes’ pipe, the suits & dresses that was in fashion at that time, the old buildings & dingy streets & the type of transport. All these things added effect to the film which made it more realistic. Finally, I also liked how most of the shots were quite dark & bleak with a boring colour scheme but then Rachel McAdams, who played Irene Adler, appears in a bright pink dress, it shows her importance & makes her seem like a fun, interesting character. I also found that the music was similar all the way through which was good.

I think people of my age group would enjoy this film because it is interesting & hooks you in because you want to work out the mystery & find out the twist at the end. Also, the actors chosen for this film are well known & fairly popular for people of my age, for example Jude Law, Robert Downy Jr & Rachel McAdams. I think older people will also enjoy this movie but younger people may struggle to grasp what is going on & lose interest in the film. I don’t believe younger people were a target audience for this film.

I think the ending of this film was good because we found out the mystery & it was a good twist at the end; it was also good because it finished on a cliff hanger which sets it up for a sequel. I would go & see the sequel if there was one because I enjoyed the movie a lot.

I didn’t hate much about the movie but I didn’t like Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly), I found her slightly irritating so I did not enjoy scenes with her in. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the film.
